Lent Thoughts from Joyce Barnett

Our Sacristan reflects on the meaning of Lent. There will be a special thanksgiving service for the Winter Night Shelter at St Ann’s Church (St Ann’s Rd, N15 5JH) on the 29th April from 4-6.30pm.

Altruism: a word that seems to have lost its place in today’s world of corporate greed etc. But not so! Two years ago, Fr. Tim was approached and asked to get involved in the Haringey Churches Winter Night Shelter Project for the homeless in our area. A good idea but a daunting prospect! Where and how can this project become a reality? After careful consideration, the door to the ‘inn’ was opened and room was found. Generous donations enabled stone pillows and earthen beds to be transformed into comfortable places of rest. No prowling beasts – instead guests were welcomed by warm smiling faces.

The word ‘altruism’ may not be known to everyone, but its meaning is known to all. How else would the Night Shelter be such a success were it not for the generosity of people, young and old, from our churches, schools and communities who gave unquestioningly of themselves in whatever capacity they could; whether preparing meals, mingling and talking to guests or rising early to cook breakfast?

So as we enter the holiest time of the Church’s year, and continue to reflect on the Via Dolorosa, may we also share in the agonies of him who selflessly ransomed his life for death upon the cross, and in doing so, taught us how to love, share and most importantly to care for people less fortunate than ourselves.

O, come into our hearts, Lord Jesus,
There is room in our hearts for thee.
