Attempting to portray the Trinity posed and still poses two major problems for painters.

First, the biblical laws against depicting God found in the Old Testament. Secondly, the problem of understanding the trinitarian nature of the Godhead. (Something that is still difficult to comprehend, even today.)

in an attempt to overcome these problems icon painters turned to the story of the hospitality of Abraham who is visited by three wanderers.

Many experts consider Rublev's Trinity (proper title: the hospitality of Abraham) to be the finest Russian icon ever painted.
